As the learning environment continues to change, students who struggle with executive functioning are continuing to need support in the areas of time management, organization, attention, and more. When these students do not have the support they need, feelings of overwhelm, anxiety, confusion, and negative self-image, can become the prominent reaction when thinking about school and learning. This session will take a look at the functions of behavior and tell the story of how struggles with executive functioning can result in behaviors that cause lost instructional time and negative social interactions at school. We will then look at some quick-win strategies to support these students so they can once again enjoy the experience of being in the classroom.
Objectives:
Participants will be able to identify at least three functions of behavior.
Participants will be able to describe at least three areas of executive functioning deficits and how struggles in these areas may cause negative behaviors.
Participants will be able to compare and contrast at least four techniques or tools to support students who are struggling with behaviors stemming from executive function deficits.
